John Stanley Ogden, manufacturer of quality padlocks and other locking devices, introduced the Lockwood brand when he established Ogden Industries in 1934.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1943, and following Ogden’s death not long after, the company was purchased by Noyes. Production was then moved to the current facility at Oakleigh.
Over the ensuing years, Ogden Industries, which owned the Lockwood brand, was acquired by National Consolidated Limited, a group company of Adelaide Steamship company.
In 1993, Email Limited acquired Ogden Industries, incorporating the Efco & Lockwood brands – so for a time Lockwood’s fortunes were mixed up with white goods! The next milestone was was the amalgamation of Whitco, Lockwood and Efco into the parent company, Lockwood Australia Limited, in 1995.
In 1999, ASSA ABLOY bought a 50% share of Lockwood Australia and formed a new entity, Lockwood Security Products Pty Limited. The winds of change swept through this iconic lock manufacturer as it was embraced by a group of companies that shared its passion for producing quality locking solutions and the vision to benchmark industry standards worldwide. Lockwood’s future commitment was to promoting security and safety awareness and offering innovative solutions to all security hardware needs.
Lockwood became the star in ASSA ABLOY’s Asia Pacific crown when the Group assumed full ownership two years later, in 2001. Best practice was introduced, the manufacturing plants at both Sherwood and Oakleigh were modernised, and groundbreaking enterprise agreements were reached.
In January 2005, Lockwood Security Products formally became ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Limited. Lockwood is ASSA ABLOY’s flagship brand in Australia and, as such, benefits from the entire group’s vast resources and technological innovations.
This year, as well as celebrating its 75th anniversary Lockwood also celebrates the launch of its latest keying platform – MT5.
