Australian Lock Manufacturer Invests Locally

ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Ltd has manufactured an extensive and quality range of premium locks and security accessories from its plant in Oakleigh, Melbourne for 70 years.

When market trends and commercial viability directed ASSA ABLOY Australia to reinvent its business model, hard decisions were taken, which are now paying dividends, says Tom Devine, ASSA ABLOY‘s General Manager, Commercial Division (Australia).

“The restructure and redevelopment were essential if we were to remain competitive,” Devine said.   “A new manufacturing footprint was established for ASSA ABLOY Australia Pty Limited to allow the company to move forward and continue manufacturing high quality security solutions locally.

“In particular, our investment of AUD$16m in the Oakleigh facility will ensure continued manufacture of high-end security products here in Australia, under the Lockwood brand,” he said.   “Our focus on our core business – new and innovative premium locking solutions with an emphasis on intellectual property and innovative design – is designed to bring excellent outcomes for the consumer and develop our export market.”

“Despite difficulty in protecting intellectual property in Australia, we still believe in the concept of the clever country,” he said.  “Our commitment is evidenced by the huge investment we have made to ensure compliance to world standards in Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety practices.”

“ASSA ABLOY Australia will focus on products which provide unique values to customers in terms of premium quality, high-end design, flexibility, delivery and service,” he said. “Our focus on R&D makes future product development very exciting.”

“Australian design expertise is already being exported to the world, assuring the future of our employees here and in our investment overall,” Devine said.

Historically a company plagued by union disputes, a relationship of trust and co-operation between ASSA ABLOY and its associated union bodies has prevailed since 1997. The certification of the 2006 Enterprise Agreement, the implementation of some innovative provisions, and the staff amenities and training facilities offered at the new Centre of Excellence strengthens that position. ASSA ABLOY is here to stay, leading the way in Australian Made lock manufacturing and an employer of choice, offering exciting career opportunities in a stable work environment.
