20 years of the Retail Training Program


The Retail Training Program (RTP) originated from the training documentation of Lockwood legend Adrian Raggatt. The project was then driven by General Mgr Ross MacDiarmid; then the documentation was compiled and then fine-tuned by Peter Connors, Peter Johnson, Sue Rogers and Hilary Kahn to create the original RTP, which was introduced to the market in April 1997.

This program was designed for those working in the retail environment, such as hardware and specialty stores selling door hardware. The program covers locks and hardware suited to residential applications and includes techniques to identify customer needs. It also focuses strongly on selling skills for add on sales.

After development work was completed, sales staff were put through a “Train the Trainer” process. So that we could have trained staff in all states capable of presenting the Retail Training Program, this way we could make it a truly national program.

The first RTP session was held in Victoria on the 8th of April 1997 at Bunnings Bourke St store and further sessions followed across the country. The popularity of the RTP has been phenomenal with over 8500 participants nationally trained over the 20 years of the program.

Training Programs

Steve Chambers (seated centre of picture) has been involved with the RTP for the entire 20 years, initially as a trainer and then as manager of the training programs.

The next challenge was to keep the program relevant to market changes and also keep up with the continual evolvement of new products in the market as well. So to make this happen the RTP has been through ten upgrades in the next 20 years to continually keep it live and current to the market needs.

ASSA ABLOY also have three other industry recognised programs, the “Trade Training Program” designed for those working in the residential builder’s environment, such as hardware and specialty stores selling door hardware for the new build market. The “Commercial Training Program” which is an ideal introductory to intermediate level training program for anyone working with door hardware for the commercial building environment and the “Industrial Training Program” this program has been developed for OEM door and window manufacturers, and distributors of the associated products.
